This week the spice we’ll be taking a closer look at is none other than delightfully delicious cinnamon!

Cinnamon is spicy and aromatic and just the smell of it brings comfort to me. Usually cinnamon is associated with sweet, not-so-healthy foods like cinnamon buns, apple pie and the likes. However cinnamon without the added sugar can do amazing things for our bodies. Here is a list of all the wonders cinnamon provides:

  • Just 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol (the bad kind)
  • It can help even out blood sugar levels in diabetics and non-diabetics alike
  • It has an anti-clotting effect on the blood
  • It contains polyphenols, antioxidants that create healthier arteries and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Simply smelling the stuff can increase mental alertness

The other great thing about cinnamon is it’s so easy to add to foods you already eat! Try adding it to:
  • Oatmeal
  • Smoothies
  • Protein Pancakes
  • Shakes
  • Sprinkle on fruit
  • Your cup of tea/coffee

Here is how I like to add cinnamon to my oatmeal:
Add 1 tsp cinnamon and grate apple into my usual morning oatmeal before cooking it. Once it comes out I sometimes top it with walnuts.

So go ahead and add some cinnamon to your day!!!
